Wildlife refuge

The heart of the project

Conservation, identity, and a landscape that defines what it means to inhabit Punta Ninfas.

What El Pedral is

Estancia El Pedral is a Patagonian estancia like no other for its seaside setting and living history. Rooted in ranching and Merino wool, it keeps the spirit of the pioneers who lived this coast in the early 20th century. In 1923, Don Félix Arbeletche had a prefabricated house brought from Normandy as a gift for his wife María. Its white and red tower still defines the landscape.

More than an estancia, El Pedral is a wildlife refuge at Punta Ninfas: a place where conservation and hospitality share the same horizon. The setting—beaches, cliffs, and marine life—meets guests who choose to experience Patagonia with time and respect.

Conservation

The setting is vast: beaches, cliffs, and unique marine biodiversity. Between September and March, a growing colony of Magellanic penguins nests on these shores. Elephant seals and sea lions can be seen year-round; from June to December, southern right whales come to Golfo Nuevo—often visible from the coast.

The El Pedral penguin colony began in 2008 with the first four pairs. With the creation of Estancia El Pedral Wildlife Refuge in 2010 (Disposición 133/2024 DFyFS-MP), dedicated to protection and conservation, growth has been steady: today thousands of breeding pairs, making it one of the destination’s standout natural attractions.

We work to protect habitats, reduce impact, and offer responsible encounters—guided walks and viewing—while staying mindful of the environment.

Philosophy

We believe in an experience that is considered yet warm: few rooms, attentive hosting, and a clear bond with the land. The refuge is not an add-on to the lodge: it is the purpose that gives meaning to stays and day visits.

A cared-for landscape: El Pedral works in a protected natural setting. We pursue low-impact practices, renewable energy, responsible waste management, and conscious ranching. We invite guests to join in small ways—such as a reusable bottle and refilling water at the estancia.

Working with nature

Field and house teams coordinate routes, seasons, and the wellbeing of wildlife along the coast and trails. Each season is different: we share access and care guidelines so visits are safe for guests and respectful of the environment.

Partnerships, science, and education

We welcome collaborations with institutions, environmental education, and monitoring projects that deepen knowledge of the gulf and long-term conservation. If you have a proposal, get in touch.
