When to see wildlife
The depth of the coast at El Pedral allows exceptional viewing from land. Orcas, whales, penguins, elephant and sea lions share the calendar with the steppe’s terrestrial wildlife.
- • Southern right whale — from the coast, July–September; they approach within metres of the beach.
- • Orcas — unpredictable but often seen; November (elephant seal pups), March–April (sea lions); also patrolling the coast at high tide.
- • Magellanic penguins — colony September–March; Punta Ninfas Wildlife Refuge (Global Penguin Society).
- • Elephant and sea lions — haul-outs at the foot of the cliffs; elephant seals from mid-September with harems and breeding season.
- • Punta Ninfas lighthouse — viewpoint and sunsets year-round.
- • Terrestrial wildlife — guanacos, foxes, maras, rheas on steppe and canyon walks.
